Melissa works in the intersection of research, design and foresight to trigger radical urban transformations to multispecies cities. Currently, she is a PhD Candidate in the University of Helsinki exploring transdisciplinary research for designing multispecies cities with emerging technologies, a fellow at the Next Generation Foresight Practitioners (NGFP) network (2022 Main Award); a biodesigner in Mycohackers (Berlin-based mycofabrication collective), a researcher fellow in NATURA (Nature-based solutions for Urban Resilience in the Anthropocene) network. Her work focuses on exploring how multispecies thinking can inform material and sensorial revolutions in urban design to care for the wellbeing, intelligence and agency of more-than-human species and ultimately design for multispecies cohabitation. Currently, she is applying these lenses to rethink design of urban light/darkness at night in Berlin. For example, she is conducting design experiments to help people to embody the sensorial worlds of other species and rethink light pollution from a nonhuman perspective, as well as biodesign experiments to collaborate with the agency of bioluminescent fungi and co-produce light. She is also conducting experiential futures workshops to create radical future scenarios of night light systems in Berlin designed for more-than-human wellbeing.
