Accelerating Sustainability in the UAE

Overview

Starting with Earth Hour we would like to have a spotlight on Sustainability within the UAE and learn more about the key players and accelerators within this ecosystem. We are therefore excited to welcome Bedayat, the Sustainability incubator from The Sustainable City to Dubai Future Foundation to tell us more about the role of Sustainability in the UAE, the accelerator program and the type of companies they support to create a positive impact with their sustainable solutions.

Ben Pullen, Business Development Manager at Bedayat Business Incubator

Ben Pullen is committed to building businesses and supporting businesses working to be an exciting sustainable world with increased equality and access to opportunities. In 2015 Ben set up to launch an electric vehicle car sharing company in Dubai. Following this he began an awareness building campaign for electric vehicles and smarter mobility across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, building world famous electric vehicle road trips and smarter mobility summits which have been support by H.E. Dr. Thani - former UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and H.E. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei - UAE Minister of Energy.

Furthermore, the events were attended and covered by the likes of Supercar Blondie, Khalid Al Amir, Sky News, CNBC Africa to name only a few. Ben is now moving into a new chapter and has taken up the role Business Development Manager at Dubai’s sustainable incubation hub called ‘Bedayat Business Incubator’. This is a hub for sustainable startups which provides the unique opportunities to pilot and test projects within The Sustainable City.

Lizelle Maistry, Sustainability Officer at SEE Institute

Lizelle Maistry holds a Bsc HONS in Environmental Management. In 2020, Lizelle joined The Sustainable City as a sustainability officer to support research & development, coordinate and develop the increasing pilot studies that the city is attracting to test out new or existing technologies and services that contribute towards a more sustainable community

Stuart Oda, Founder & CEO at Alesca Life Technologies

Stuart is an investment banker turned urban farmer with a passion for innovation and sustainability. In 2013, Stuart founded Alesca Life, an agricultural technology company that builds indoor, vertical farms and farm management solutions to make food production more localized and data-driven. Alesca has developed patented hardware systems, operational management software, real-time monitoring and automation devices, and computer vision AI systems to grow plants using 95~99% less water, fertilizer, and land compared to traditional farms with no need for chemical pesticides. Alesca has been recognized by the World Economic Forum as a 2019 Technology Pioneer and 2020 Sustainable Development Goal Champion and selected into prestigious global accelerator programs including Stanford StartX, Unreasonable Impact, Dubai Future Accelerators, and BitsxBites as a leader in the field of precision farming and hyper-local food production.
